Tennessee Titans Pro-Bowl defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons continues to make waves in the media because of the ongoing discussions regarding his contract. This time, though, it may be positive news for Titans fans.
Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently dropped a list that named every player in the NFL that is due to get paid on a big extension and stay with their current teams.
Simmons was one of the names listed, and according to PFF’s Ari Meirov, it shouldn’t be a shocker that Tennessee wants to keep him around. This, from PFF's article:
DI JEFFERY SIMMONS, TENNESSEE TITANS
Titans general manager Jon Robinson said at the NFL combine that Simmons is one of the players they want to keep around for a long time, and that comes as no surprise. The former first-round pick is coming off of a career year with 8.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hits, 12 tackles for loss, six passes defended and 62 total quarterback pressures. He’s one of just seven interior defensive linemen with 100-plus quarterback pressures over the past two seasons.
Simmons might not be a household name just yet for the average NFL fan, but don’t be surprised if he is rewarded with a mega contract.
If Jon Robinson and the Titans are as motivated to keep Simmons in Tennessee as they claim to be, it shouldn’t be too hard to see the sides coming together for a deal.
As I wrote in a previous article this week, there’s no question that Simmons is worthy of an increase in pay, and Simmons seems to be interested in getting things done as well. His recent move to hire an agent is sure to expedite the process.
Jeffery Simmons is worth keeping around as long as possible. That goes without saying. He’s an essential piece of the Titans defense, and as long as the championship window is open in Nashville, he needs to be there.
This really does feel like a no brainer, and it would behoove the Titans to get this done sooner rather than later. You have no time to waste, and getting Simmons back on the field as soon as possible, preferably by the start of training camp, needs to be a priority.
I’ve continued to contest that an extension for Simmons would likely mirror that of Washington Commanders DT Jonathan Allen, who signed a four-year, $72 million deal to return back to DC this offseason.
Assuming Simmons’ deal is in the same ballpark, and it’s a small price to pay to lock down the best player in your front seven.
