NFL analyst Brian Baldinger, a former offensive lineman out of Duke who played in the NFL for 12 seasons, paid a massive compliment this week to a Tennessee Titans player that I think is vastly underrated.
Baldinger sent a tweet out on Saturday afternoon that praised Titans safety Kevin Byard as a player who is becoming an elite NFL defender.
[Kevin Byard] is slowly separating himself as one of the ELITE safeties in the NFL," tweeted Baldinger. "Shows up every week; every year. The resume’ is building to greatness, but like all great players…always more to learn! Every young safety can learn from Byard."
It seems crazy to call Byard underrated considering he received a mega contract extension from the Titans before the 2019 season. There's also the fact that Byard has gone to two Pro-Bowls in his career (including last season). But despite his contract and those accolades, it still feels like Byard is largely ignored by the national media.
That's why it has to be nice for him to receive some recognition for his elite play from a respected analyst like Baldinger.
Byard, by the way, was Pro Football Focus's highest graded safety this past season with a 90.4 grade. He excelled in pass coverage (90.9 grade) and run defense (90.4 grade). The former Middle Tennessee standout is truly an elite all-around safety that should be able to hold down the backend of the Titans' defense for years to come.
