The Tennessee Titans are hiring former Houston Texans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly to their staff.

The news was first reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and confirmed by A to Z Sports Titans reporter Buck Reising.

Kelly and Mike Vrabel worked together in Houston from 2014 to 2017. Kelly took over as the Texans' offensive coordinator in 2019 and served in that role until 2021. He's also coached tight ends and quarterbacks in Houston.

In 2019, the Texans had the No. 14 scoring offense in the NFL. That dropped to No. 18 in 2020 and No. 30 in 2021 (the sudden drop in 2021 can be attributed to Houston not having quarterback Deshaun Watson).

The obvious question is what does this mean for Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing?

Likely nothing…for now.

This is probably a situation where Vrabel is bringing Kelly in to help improve the offense, while also providing the Titans with some insurance in the event that Downing is fired in 2022.

If the Titans aren't going to fire Downing after scoring just 16 points against the Cincinnati Bengals in the divisional round of the playoffs, this is probably the next best move.
