The Tennessee Vols finished the 2021 regular with a 7-5 record, which means the program will play in a bowl game next month.

Josh Heupel is guaranteed a winning record in his first season leading the Vols, regardless of what happens in the bowl game. It will be the first time since 2009 under Lane Kiffin that a first-year UT head coach finishes with a winning record (Derek Dooley went 6-7 in 2010, Butch Jones went 5-7 in 2013, and Jeremy Pruitt went 5-7 in 2018).

The latest bowl game projections from ESPN have the Volunteers playing in the Duke's Mayo Bowl (formerly the Belk Bowl) on December 30 in Charlotte, NC (10:30 AM CT/11:30 AM ET).

One projection has the Vols playing Virginia, while the other projection has Tennessee playing Miami.

I think the scenario where the Vols play Miami in Charlotte would be tremendous.

Seeing two storied programs that have been down on their luck in recent years facing off in a bowl game would be fun.

And playing in Charlotte would be ideal for the Vols. North Carolina is an extremely important recruiting area for Tennessee. It's an area they need to dominate (like they did in the mid to late 90s). Playing in Charlotte — and possibly blowing out Miami — would certainly help those recruiting efforts in NC.

Other potential bowl game options for the Vols include the Music City Bowl in Nashville or the TaxSlayer Bowl (Gator Bowl) in Jacksonville, FL.
