The Tennessee Vols are hoping to avoid a heartbreaking loss on the recruiting trail this week.

Tennessee is widely viewed as the favorite to land 2024 four-star athlete Boo Carter.

Carter, 5-foot-10/184 lbs from Chattanooga, TN, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 20 athlete in the nation and the No. 3 player in the state of Tennessee.

The Tennessee native is set to announce his commitment on June 17 in Manhattan, but there's no guarantee he'll be picking the Vols.

In fact, there's real concern that Michigan could swoop in and steal Carter from Tennessee.

Carter is coming off a visit to Michigan this past weekend that reportedly went very well for the Wolverines.

“I enjoyed myself at Michigan this past weekend because the coaches showed my family a lot of love,” said Carter to On3. “Me and the recruits were already close and tight because we’ve known each other for a while. But hanging out with some of the recruits and getting to know their families was great, as well as getting real close with Coach (Jim) Harbaugh.”

Carter, who could play offense or defense in college, also pointed out that he likes that Michigan is willing to play true freshmen in key roles if they're ready.

Michigan, a team that hopes to compete for national championships, is pushing hard for Carter.

Losing Carter to the Wolverines would be a huge blow to Tennessee's 2024 recruiting class. The Vols, who also hope to compete for national championships, can't afford to lose a key in-state player to another program.

The Vols have the distance factor working in their favor. And that might be enough to seal the deal for Tennessee. But nothing is certain in this intense recruiting battle. While I expect Carter to pick the Vols on June 17, it wouldn't be shocking to see him commit to Michigan.
