The Tennessee Titans signed pass rusher Arden Key in an offseason move that flew under the national media’s radar. Key agreed to a three-year deal worth $21 million, but has an opportunity to collect an extra $3 million in incentives along the way.
Drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the third round of the 2018 draft, Key has made four stops in his five-year career. The well-traveled outside linebacker is looking to find a home with the Titans with a strong output in 2023.
Though he has accumulated 11 sacks combined over the last two seasons, Key has never tallied seven sacks in a single season. He will need to do even more than that in order for the Titans to fork over a hefty chunk of change.
Let’s dive into Key’s incentives, per Spotrac.
| Incentive | Reward |
|---|---|
8 or 8.5 sacks | $500,000 |
9 or 9.5 sacks | $750,000 ($250,000 + original $500,000) |
10 or more sacks | $1 million ($250,000 + original $750,000) |
It is important to note that Key's incentives are spread out equally over his three-year deal. This means that he must meet these certain benchmarks in each of the next three seasons in order to take home the $3 million.
Though the sack totals are significant, they are not unattainable by any stretch of the imagination. Key will benefit playing alongside the likes of Harold Landry, Denico Autry and Jeffery Simmons, who will command most of the offense's attention up front.
Key will also assume a major role in the Titans' pass rush. He will be afforded plenty of opportunities to introduce himself to opposing quarterbacks. If all goes well, the Titans will happily hand over Key's full allotment of incentives as it would likely directly translate to another fantastic season in the trenches.
