The Tennessee Titans have had a need at wide receiver all offseason. Even after some solid additions to the defense in free agency and a draft class that gets the fanbase excited about the future, not having a major addition at wide receiver is the dark cloud looming over the 2023 season.
But after all of the rumors and some disappointment, the perfect solution for the Titans problems just became readily available.
The Arizona Cardinals released five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins on Friday, immediately making him a free agent.
Hopkins has been a name linked to the Titans for a while. Even going into his age 31 season, Hopkins was dominant for the Cardinals last season, and he'd provide the Titans with the experienced wide out they need opposite of Treylon Burks.
In nine games, the veteran tallied 64 catches, 717 yards, and three touchdowns in 2022. Hopkins played five of those nine games without Kyler Murray under center, an even bigger testament to his abilities.
While Hopkins and the Titans always felt like a good on-field fit, Hopkins' contract situation made a trade nearly impossible. The veteran wide out was carrying a big cap hit in 2023. With Arizona now releasing him outright, the Cardinals will eat $22 million in cap space in 2023, and Hopkins is free to sign any deal with a new team.
No large cap hit? No players or draft picks being sent the other way? Sign me up. The Titans should be making calls to Hopkins' agent as we speak. If they were to land Hopkins, a wide receiver room of Hopkins, Treylon Burks, Kyle Philips, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, and Chris Moore is…not too bad after all. Especially when you consider that both Chig Okonkwo and Tyjae Spears should have significant roles as pass catchers.
This is exactly what the Titans needed, but there will be plenty of other suitors. Now we wait and see if they can sign him.
