The Tennessee Titans are leaving no stone unturned throughout this year’s draft process. With questions hovering over QB Ryan Tannehill’s future with the team, the Titans front office and coaching staff have been doing their due diligence on the 2022 quarterback class.
On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Titans have met with Liberty University QB Malik Willis. Titans QB coach Pat O’Hara attended Willis’ Pro Day at Liberty, where he had a chance to see the highly rated quarterback’s arm strength in person.
In 2020, Willis led all FBS quarterbacks in rushing yards (944) and finished tied for seventh among all FBS players in rushing touchdowns (14). This past season, Willis was a one-man show – not only did he throw for 2,857 yards, 27 TDs, and 12 INTs, but he also led the team with 878 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.
With his dual-threat abilities, it is no surprise that most mock drafts have Willis being one of, if not the first, quarterback off the board. With the NFL Draft set for April 28th, Willis is gaining a significant amount of buzz to be selected in the top 10.
While the Titans are slotted with the 26th overall pick, the odds that Willis will be available by the time Tennessee goes on the clock are slim to none. However, there is no event in sports less predictable than the NFL Draft.
While trading up for a quarterback in the first round would certainly raise some eyebrows across the NFL, nothing is ever completely off the table with an aggressive general manager like the Titans have in Jon Robinson.
Willis is not the only quarterback the Titans have shown interest in. O’Hara was on hand for the Pro Days of Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder and Pittsburgh’s Kenny Picket, while the team was also represented at North Carolina’s Pro Day to evaluate Sam Howell.
Though Tannehill is under contract through the 2024 season, there is a potential “out” in his contract after the conclusion of the upcoming season, per Spotrac.com. While the Titans continue to position themselves for a Super Bowl run in 2022, it has become increasingly more evident that the team is planning on drafting a quarterback at some point in this draft.
