If you watched the Tennessee Vols' 24-17 win against the Alabama Crimson Tide this past weekend, you may have noticed a couple of Bama players practicing their jump shots in the middle of a play.
At one point during the game, Alabama ran a quarterback sneak on fourth down with quarterback Jalen Milroe. Crimson Tide wide receivers Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard weren't involved in the play, so when the ball was snapped, they stepped back from the line of scrimmage and pretended to shoot jump shots. It was a bizarre moment in the game.
On Monday, Alabama offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan, who was a graduate assistant at Tennessee during the Butch Jones era, was asked about the jump shots and he offered a cryptic response that explained…..well, nothing.
"Yeah, you’re talking about the quarterback sneak? Yeah, there’s nothing on the field that we’re not coaching," said Sheridan. "So that’s sort of how I’d answer that."
I don't know if that means that Alabama is coaching their wide receivers to shoot jump shots on quarterback sneaks or if it means that it's something that they'll coach the wide receivers not to do in the future.
Either way, it was an odd moment that had absolutely no impact on the play. And if that does turn out to be something that Alabama is coaching their wide receivers to do under Kalen DeBoer, then it's easy to see why the Crimson Tide seem to be struggling offensively lately.
