Former Florida Gators head coach Steve Spurrier had a hard time complimenting the Tennessee Vols this week before eventually sending a subtle warning to the UT football program.

Spurrier joined Another Dooley Noted Podcast on Monday and he started his weekly appearance by noting that Florida, which is 4-3 on the season, has lost two games to really good teams in Texas A&M and Miami.

The Gators' other loss was to Tennessee two weeks ago.

"I think we're (Florida) heading in the right direction after the other night (UF's win against Kentucky)," said Spurrier. "I tell you what, we've lost to two really good teams — Texas A&M and Miami. Had a chance to beat Tennessee, obviously, [it] didn't work out."

Later in the interview, Spurrier again said that Florida has lost to two good teams, before finally admitting that the Gators have lost to three good teams.

"I've seen teams that can turn it around at some point, and we can do that, and we've lost to two — three really good teams," said Spurrier.

You know it kills Spurrier to give Tennessee any credit (and hey, I love that Spurrier is that way — the pettiness is part of what really makes college football so incredible).

Which is why it's not a surprise that Spurrier also seemingly warned Tennessee that winning games by a close margin isn't sustainable.

"They (Tennessee) hit that third-and-six touchdown (against Alabama), if they don't hit that — Nico (Iamaleava) did make a perfect throw on that one, but he was off on so many during the course of the game, but that one was there," said Spurrier. "But let's say he makes a bad throw there, or they miss that, they kick a field goal and go in overtime. So either team could've won. When you play a three point game or this and that, it's a play or two that determines the winner. And, of course, Tennessee's won both of the last two at home — Florida and Alabama. So, if they keep playing those games, though, they're not going to win all of them like that. It runs out after a while."

Classic Spurrier — dismiss Tennessee as a good team, throw some shade at the Vols' quarterback for missing some throws, and then suggest that UT's luck is going to run out at some point.

I'm sure the Vols would love to win every game by 45 points. But ultimately, all they care about is being plus one on the scoreboard at the end of the night and moving on the next one. Wins count the same no matter how big the margin of victory happens to be.
