True freshman Faizon Brandon was named by Vols head coach Josh Heupel on Monday as Tennessee’s starting quarterback for Week 1 against Furman.

Brandon beat out redshirt freshman George MacIntyre for the job during fall camp.

“I think in all [it was] his control, command of what we’re doing offensively,” said Heupel when asked what led to Brandon winning the job. “That’s in run game, the RPO game, the drop back, play action. Combine that with fundamentals, technique, and pocket awareness, you put all those things together [with] decision-making and taking care of the football while still allowing his playmakers to make plays down the field.”

Vols EDGE Jordan Norman drops quote about Faizon Brandon that has fans fired up

Vols edge rusher Jordan Norman, a Tulane transfer, was asked about Brandon winning the job on Monday.

And Norman dropped a quote about the true freshman that shows how Brandon is viewed by the defense.

Norman said trying to tackle Brandon is like trying to tackle former NFL MVP Lamar Jackson.

“I would say, honestly, it’s like trying to tackle Lamar Jackson,” said Norman. “Somebody who can run and shake you.”

Norman added that Brandon made a play in spring practice that made him realize the true freshman “could be that.”

Vols defensive lineman Tyree Weathersby said on Monday that he thinks either quarterback would’ve been a good option for Tennessee.

But I think it’s clear that Brandon’s athletic playmaking ability gives him an opportunity to be a special player in the SEC, and that’s ultimately why Heupel had no choice but to give him the nod for the Week 1 matchup against Furman.
