The Tennessee Vols climbed three spots in this week’s AP Top 25 poll because of their blowout win against the Kentucky Wildcats.

Tennessee went from No. 17 to No. 14 in the AP Top 25, following a 56-34 road win over the Wildcats this past weekend.

The Volunteers are 6-2 as we enter the final month of the 2025 college football regular season.

ESPN’s Greg McElroy has Tennessee ranked significantly lower than the AP Top 25

Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback turned ESPN analyst Greg McElroy isn’t shy about being dismissive of Tennessee, so it’s no surprise that he has the Vols ranked significantly lower than the AP Top 25 this week.

McElroy has Tennessee at No. 21 in his personal top 25 rankings.

“At number 21 is Tennessee,” said McElroy. “They are 6-2. They have no wins against teams that are currently above .500. Now, Oklahoma comes to them this week. So a big opportunity in Neyland this weekend to dispatch of a Sooner team that is also 6-2 and firmly ranked in the top 20. It’s a big opportunity for Tennessee in a gotta have it situation.”

Regardless of how you feel about McElroy’s ranking of the Vols, he’s right about Tennessee’s matchup against Oklahoma this weekend. If the Vols want to show they’re worthy of a spot in the College Football Playoff, then they absolutely have to beat the Sooners in Knoxville on Saturday night. A loss would essentially end Tennessee’s playoff hopes.

Tennessee and Oklahoma are set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
