Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker reportedly has a new home in the NFL after getting released by the Detroit Lions earlier this week.
According to multiple reports, the Carolina Panthers are expected to sign Hooker to their practice squad.
Hooker was released by the Lions after failing to win the backup quarterback competition against Kyle Allen.
Hooker is from Greensboro, NC, which is just an hour north of Charlotte, so it’s certainly a good landing spot for the former Vol.
It’s also an ironic landing spot.
The Panthers’ starting quarterback is former Alabama standout Bryce Young.
Three years ago, Hooker and Young were the starting quarterbacks in one of the most exciting college football games in recent memory.
In 2022, Hooker and the Vols knocked off Young and the Crimson Tide in a 52-49 thriller in Knoxville. It was Tennessee’s first win against Alabama since 2006.
Hooker passed for 385 yards and five touchdowns in that win against Alabama. Young, meanwhile, passed for 455 yards and two touchdowns as the Crimson Tide came up just short in Young’s only start in Neyland Stadium.
Three years later and Hooker will be a depth option behind Young on the Panthers’ depth chart.
That almost certainly isn’t how Hooker saw things working out when the Lions selected him in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. But at least the former Vol will be close to home as he gets a fresh start.
