A former Tennessee Vols quarterback unexpectedly received an NFL promotion on Tuesday.

Well, it’s not officially a promotion on paper.

Former Vols quarterback Bo Hardegree, who has served as the quarterbacks coach for the Tennessee Titans since the start of the 2024 season, is taking over as the franchise’s offensive playcaller according to head coach Brian Callahan.

Hardegree played at Tennessee from 2003 to 2006.

Callahan, who was the Cincinnati Bengals’ offensive coordinator before taking over in Nashville in 2024, previously called plays for the Titans.

“Bo’s had some interim experience calling [plays], he’s done it with a rookie quarterback before,” said Callahan on Tuesday while announcing the change. “That part will make it a little bit seamless in that regard.”

Can Bo Hardegree give the Titans a spark?

Hardegree, who called plays as the interim offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023, will hope to provide a spark for a Titans team that’s off to a dreadful start this season.

The Titans are 0-3 through the first three weeks of the season, and they’ve yet to score more than 20 points in a game.

Now, it’s important to remember that the Titans are starting a rookie quarterback in Cam Ward, so some growing pains are inevitable. However, the Titans have also been plagued by drops, missed assignments, protection issues, and, apparently, a lack of motivation. These problems go beyond just having a rookie quarterback.

I don’t know if handing over playcalling duties to Hardegree is going to do much to change those issues.

Callahan is 3-17 through his first 20 games as the Titans’ head coach. The decision to hand over playcalling duties to Hardegree feels like a Hail Mary attempt to save his job. And those attempts are usually not successful.
