Former Tennessee Vols standout gets the last laugh in intense rivalry against prominent NFL fan base
A former Tennessee Vols standout is doing all the laughing after Sunday night.
Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Velus Jones Jr is a Super Bowl champion.
Jones was active for the Seattle Seahawks in their win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX on Sunday night in Santa Clara.
The former Vol even made a couple of key plays on special teams by downing two punts inside the five yard line.
Tennessee fans were undoubtedly thrilled to see Jones play a role in the Seahawks’ Super Bowl win.
Not every fan base, however, felt the same way.
Chicago Bears fans weren’t rooting for Velus Jones Jr in the Super Bowl
Jones started his career with the Chicago Bears after getting selected by the historic NFL franchise in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately for Jones, his time in Chicago didn’t go well. The Alabama native fumbled three times as a rookie. He also muffed two punts while totaling just 107 receiving yards in 12 games.
Chicago released Jones in 2024, a move that many Bears fans celebrated.
Unsurprisingly, Bears fans weren’t happy to see Jones have success in the Super Bowl (open the tweet below to see a litany of negative responses about Jones).
Jones acknowledged the “hate” Sunday night after the Super Bowl via a post on Twitter/X.com.
It’s been a bumpy road in the NFL for Jones — he also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, and Carolina Panthers before landing in Seattle — but his perseverance was rewarded on Sunday night in Santa Clara. The former Vol now joins an exclusive club of football players who have a Super Bowl ring.
