A former Tennessee Titans Pro-Bowler says the Tennessee Vols aren't getting into the 12-team College Football Playoff.
The Vols are currently the first team "out" of the playoff based on the latest College Football Playoff rankings, which means Tennessee needs some help.
And former Titans offensive lineman Ben Jones, a former Georgia Bulldogs standout, doesn't think the Vols are going to get that help.
"Tennessee ain't getting in," said Jones on The Players' Lounge this week. "I can go ahead and tell you Tennessee ain't getting in."
"Tennessee needs a lot of help, I agree with that," added former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray. "Tennessee needs Ohio State to blow out Indiana this weekend."
Murray is correct that Tennessee needs Ohio State to blow out Indiana this weekend. The Hoosiers are currently undefeated, but they've played a weak schedule. The idea is that if the Buckeyes blow out Indiana, it'll prove that the Hoosiers aren't a playoff caliber team.
CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd, however, suggested this week that Indiana should still make the playoff even if they get blown out by Ohio State.
"Shame on yourself for doubting Indiana's credentials no matter the result on Saturday," wrote Dodd. "In a perfect world, that outcome shouldn't matter. Indiana has done enough. After Ohio State, the only risk in a regular-season finale against hapless Purdue is a turned ankle or two."
Whether or not you think the Vols deserve to be in the playoff over Indiana doesn't really matter. All that matters is what the committee thinks. And at this point, I don't think anyone knows what to expect from the committee thanks to their stunning lack of consistency in how they approach the rankings.
And while it seems obvious that Tennessee should be in the playoff if Indiana loses to Ohio State (unless you're Dennis Dodd), it's entirely possible that the Vols are left out of the playoff even if they get the help they need.
It won't be right, but nothing about college football seems to be "right" at the moment.
