Former Tennessee Vols quarterback JT Shrout is transferring for a second time in his collegiate career and his choice is a bit….bizarre.

Shrout, who transferred from Tennessee to Colorado after the 2020 season, is transferring to Arkansas State to play for former Vols head coach Butch Jones.

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Shrout has one year of eligibility remaining. That could turn into two years if he's granted a medical redshirt.

The reason that Shrout is transferring to Arkansas State is in part due to the presence of Jones.

According to Thamel's report for ESPN, Jones was endorsed by some of Shrout's former Vols teammates as a good person and a good coach.

From ESPN:

According to sources, Shrout was attracted to the potential opportunity at Arkansas State, including playing in offensive coordinator Keith Heckendorf's West Coast-style offense. Shrout also had some teammates at Tennessee who played for Jones, and sources said the former teammates endorsed Jones both as a person and a coach.

Opinions on Jones as a coach have been mixed from former players, though it's worth noting that former Tennessee quarterback Josh Dobbs called Jones a "really good dude" during an appearance on "Bussin with the Boys" earlier this month.

Shrout spent three seasons at Tennessee, including his redshirt season in 2018. Most of his teammates in 2018 previously played for Jones.

During Shrout's time at UT, he passed for 494 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Jones is 5-19 through two seasons at Arkansas State. He landed the ASU job after three seasons as an offensive analyst/assistant to the head coach at Alabama.
