Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions last month.
And he's already receiving significant praise from the Detroit media.
Hooker, who tore his ACL last November in Tennessee's shocking loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks, is still working his way back into action, but that hasn't stopped him from impressing during Detroit's first rookie minicamp.
Despite not being able to fully participate in Lions minicamp, Hooker's leadership skills have still managed to stand out.
SB Nation's Lions website, Pride of Detroit, pointed out this week that Hooker hasn't been passive during minicamp even though he can't participate in reps. Instead, he's "right in the middle of the action between plays and drills".
Several of Hooker's teammates, in fact, have already taken notice of Hooker's elite leadership abilities.
“He’s just walking around, dapping everybody up,” said rookie wide receiver Antoine Green (via SB Nation). “I think he’s a great leader. Just watching him, too. I watched him over the course of last season and I feel like he’s a phenomenal player. I think he’ll do great here.”
“It’s electric to be around,” added rookie guard Colby Sorsdal. “He’s a great dude and we were kind of talking during the stretch and whatnot, just about getting used to being an NFL player. We talked about this being a dream come true, and it is. We’re blessed to be out here and it’s just cool to be around him. His energy is contagious.”
Tennessee fans certainly aren't surprised to hear these comments. Hooker proved countless times at UT that he's a natural leader. And it looks like he's already proving the same thing in the NFL.
