Just days after making a few nice plays during training camp, a former Tennessee Vols standout has decided to retire from the NFL.

Former Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd, who also played at Baylor, signed with the New England Patriots last month.

The running back turned wide receiver had a nice showing this week, making an impressive grab in the back of the end zone at one point.

Despite that nice play, Hurd, who wasn't on a roster in 2022 while receiving from injury, has apparently decided to retire from the NFL.

Hurd, a third-round selection by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2019 NFL Draft, never took a snap in a regular season NFL game.

The Tennessee native left the Vols in late 2016 amid the messy ending of the Butch Jones era (which didn't officially end until late 2017).

If Hurd had stuck around at UT (he left in part because Jones wasn't entirely honest with him), he probably would've ended up being the Vols' all-time rushing leader.

As it is, Hurd finished with 2,638 rushing yards, good enough for sixth all-time at Tennessee (and just over 400 yards away from Travis Henry's school record of 3,078 rushing yards).

Hurd was also a competent receiver, catching 67 passes for 492 yards and six touchdowns during his time at Tennessee. He also had 20 total rushing touchdowns.
