Former Tennessee Vols offensive lineman Trey Smith wasn't selected until the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
It was a disappointing tumble down draft boards for a former five-star recruit with first round talent.
The reason for Smith slipping to the sixth round had to do with the medical issues (blood clots) that he dealt with during his time at Tennessee.
Smith, however, has been healthy since entering the NFL two years ago. The Tennessee native has played in 33 regular season games during his first two seasons in the NFL.
While Smith might not be happy that he fell to the sixth round of the draft, he's certainly happy to be in Kansas City where he gets to play alongside Patrick Mahomes, the best quarterback in the NFL.
Smith won his first Super Bowl last season while blocking for Mahomes.
Blocking, by the way, isn't the only job that Smith performs for the Chiefs.
According to Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce, Smith is the Chiefs' enforcer — specifically for Mahomes.
During a recent appearance on "Bussin with the Boys" Kelce revealed that Smith is the team's enforcer when a defensive player goes after Mahomes.
"Trey Smith baby," said Kelce when asked who serves as the enforcer for Mahomes. "He's a dog, he's a dog. Just a F–ing beast."
(Kelce makes the comment at the 1:44:00 mark of the video above.)
Mahomes and Kelce are two of the biggest superstars in professional sports. For Smith to receive that kind of compliment, it obviously means he's a well-respected member of the Chiefs. And it also means that Kelce and Mahomes have a lot of trust in Smith.
Of course, I'm sure Tennessee fans aren't surprised that Smith is Mahomes' "enforcer" — the former Vol made a name for himself in college by playing with a "nasty" attitude on the field.
Smith may not have been a first round draft pick like many expected, but he's carved out a nice role for himself with the Chiefs as a starting offensive lineman and enforcer for one of the most recognizable football players in the world.
