A former Tennessee Vols defensive lineman who surprisingly transferred after the 2024 season has earned a starting job at his new program.

Defensive lineman Jayson Jenkins, a former three-star recruit from New Jersey, transferred to Florida State earlier this offseason despite seeing significant action for the Volunteers in 2024.

The Seminoles revealed their depth chart ahead of their season-opener against Alabama and it has Jenkins listed as a starter.

The former Vol earned a starting job with the Seminoles despite missing time with an injury during the offseason.

“He’s a violent player,” said Florida State head coach Mike Norvell this week when asked about Jenkins. “You feel his presence. We knew that whenever he was coming in. Unfortunately it was delayed in person just with the injury there in the spring, and having to kind of work through his rehab process. But he attacked every day..I think Jayson is a guy that I’m really looking forward to seeing out there on the field. He brings a physicality and an explosiveness that’s absolutely needed, and he plays with an incredible motor.”

Jenkins played 214 snaps for Tennessee last season, just 12 fewer than Omarr Norman-Lott (who was a second round selection by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2025 NFL Draft).

I don’t think there’s any doubt that Jenkins, who totaled nine tackles for loss and two sacks last season, would’ve been a key part of Tennessee’s defensive line rotation this fall — which is why it’s surprising that he decided to leave the UT program after three seasons in Knoxville (especially with Tennessee losing a couple of experienced defensive linemen in Norman-Lott, James Pearce, and Omari Thomas).

Jenkins will get his first taste of action with Florida State on Saturday when the Seminoles open the 2025 college football season at home against Alabama.
