A former Tennessee Vols defender who went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft was praised this week by one of the top coaches in the NFL.

Former Vols defensive back Jaylen McCollough wasn’t selected in last year’s draft, but he quickly signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent.

Not only did McCollough make the Rams’ 53-man roster out of training camp last summer, but he also ended up playing a key role throughout the season for Los Angeles.

The former Vol totaled 43 tackles and four interceptions (including a pick six) while playing in all 17 regular season games for the Rams.

Rams head coach Sean McVay was asked about McCollough earlier this week and he had plenty of great things to say about the Georgia native.

“He’s so valuable, he’s so versatile,” said McVay. “He can play safety, he can play the dime linebacker. I mean, you look at when we played Seattle last year, the first game, he was playing linebacker on early normal down and distances, and taking on guards when they’re easily climbing to him uncovered. And he’s just one of those guys that, you know, what’s cool is, when you guys ask me about different players, these are people you don’t bet against. They just show their value. They’re grown men. They’re mature beyond their years.

“That’s exactly how Tank McCullough came in last year. And I think there’s certain guys that just have a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He was doing that at Tennessee. It’s not by mistake that he had the ball production that he did last year. He’s made of the right stuff, and I love what he’s about. And he’s just continued to get better and to really show his value to this football team.”

McCollough played at Tennessee from 2019 to 2023. He totaled 242 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, two sacks, and six interceptions during his time in Knoxville.

‘Dummy it down a little bit’ – Did Georgia’s Kirby Smart take another shot at the Tennessee Vols’ offense?

A little over two years ago, Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart seemingly took a shot at the role that quarterbacks play in the Tennessee Vols’ offense (and other up-tempo offenses). Smart suggested that quarterbacks in “really fast” offenses aren’t true decision makers. “It’s like, a true quarterback is a decision-maker in our system because […]
