A former Tennessee Vols wide receiver who left Rocky Top after the 2024 season was named by ESPN this week as a potential breakout player for the 2025 college football season.

Wide receiver Squirrel White spent three seasons at Tennessee before transferring to Florida State during the offseason. The former Vol caught 131 passes for 1,665 yards and six touchdowns during his time in Knoxville.

ESPN included White this week on their list of “sleeper college football players” that could break out in 2025.

From ESPN: White is among a sizable group of transfers coming to FSU to reboot the offense under new coordinator Gus Malzahn. He brings significant SEC experience with 38 games at Tennessee, where he caught 131 passes for 1,665 yards and 6 touchdowns. White had his most productive season in 2023, recording 67 catches for 803 yards, but saw his numbers drop last fall as Tennessee spread the ball around with quarterback Nico Iamaleava. White is undersized but boasts breakaway speed and has 10 career catches of 40 yards or longer and six of 50 yards or longer.

“He has big-time potential,” said Florida State coach Mike Norvell to ESPN of White. “His speed and explosiveness stand out. He is one of the fastest guys on the team, one of the faster guys in the country. He’s got great ability to separate. He’s really good with the ball in his hands as well. So I think just a variety of things that he can do, but really pushing the ball down the field is something that we’re excited about.”

Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos also had some great things to say about White during the offseason.

“Squirrel, he’s amazing,” said Castellanos in July. “He’s fast. He’s really fast. So getting back with him in the summer, we worked a lot. And we’ve been working a lot, just trying to build that timing, and being able to trust him on when he’s going to come out of his break and stuff like that. But he’s been full throttle in the summer and he looks great. He’s moving really well. I’m just excited for you guys (reporters) to see him.”

White was one of three former Vols to transfer to Florida State this past offseason. Defensive lineman Jayson Jenkins and linebacker Elijah Herring also joined the Seminoles following the 2024 season (Herring, who started his career at Tennessee, spent the 2024 season at Memphis).
