It hasn't been an easy week for former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs.
After getting off to a quick start with the Minnesota Vikings (after he was traded from the Arizona Cardinals), Dobbs has struggled in recent weeks.
This past week, Dobbs was benched during the Vikings' 3-0 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. He was replaced by Nick Mullens, who led Minnesota on their only scoring drive of the day.
Earlier this week, the Vikings announced that Mullens will start on Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
That was obviously tough news for Dobbs. But it might not be the only tough news he gets this week.
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell acknowledged this week that he hasn't decided who the backup quarterback will be this week against Cincinnati. Rookie quarterback Jaren Hall, who actually started at quarterback in Dobbs' first game with Minnesota, is healthy and could serve as the backup against the Bengals.
"Josh understands first and foremost that when we lost Kirk Cousins, we were a .500 football team," said O'Connell this week (via ESPN). "And we're now a game over .500 and Josh led us to three wins."
"I think Josh understands the process and where we've been at," added O'Connell. "I think he has respect for the opportunity he had and some of the really good things that he did."
Regardless of what happens the rest of the season, Dobbs has positioned himself well to earn a nice free agent deal this upcoming offseason. He probably won't get a chance to start, but he could get a chance to be a team's primary backup in 2024 and beyond.
