The Tennessee Vols had a huge game through the air against the Kentucky Wildcats this past weekend in Lexington.

Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar passed for 396 yards and three touchdowns in the 56-34 win over Kentucky.

Additionally, the Vols’ three starting wide receivers — Chris Brazzell, Mike Matthews, and Braylon Staley — all went over 100 receiving yards.

Brazzell and Matthews eclipsed 100 receiving yards earlier in the game. It wasn’t until the final drive of the game, though, that Staley went over 100 receiving yards.

Tennessee made sure to get Braylon Staley over 100 receiving yards

With time winding down in the fourth quarter, Staley was stuck on 99 receiving yards. At that point in the game, the result had already been determined. Tennessee just had to run the clock out to make the win official.

Vols head coach Josh Heupel and the offensive staff, however, dialed up a short pass to Staley to make sure the redshirt freshman went over 100 receiving yards.

After Staley made a six-yard reception, bringing his total to 105 receiving yards for the game, Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar took two knees to run out the clock and end the game.

Aguilar told reporters after the game that the Vols were aware that Staley needed another catch to go over 100 receiving yards.

“Toward the end, [we were] definitely trying to get Bray to that 100 (yard) mark for sure,” said Aguilar.

Staley was asked on Tuesday about going over 100 receiving yards against Kentucky.

“I felt really blessed in that moment,” said Aguilar. “I appreciate all of my coaches for that — giving me an opportunity to go do that.”

It’s not always going to work out that a team can get a player over a certain statistical mark — sometimes the staff isn’t even aware that a player may be near a milestone due to the flow of the game (things like that tend to get overlooked in close games). But it worked out in this situation that Tennessee could get Staley over the 100 yard mark, resulting in a pretty cool final stat line for the Vols’ three starting wide receivers.
