Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel needs to act fast or he'll risk missing out on a key hire to the Georgia Bulldogs.
There are rumblings that Vols cornerbacks coach Willie Martinez won't be back in 2024. His contract expires before the start of spring practice and retirement is a possibility.
Former LSU cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond, who was just let go by Florida this week, would be a home run replacement for Martinez. Raymond is one of the best recruiters in the nation, he has extensive SEC experience, he's sent a load of defensive backs to the NFL, and he's available.
The only problem is that Georgia might also be interested in hiring Raymond.
The only way for Tennessee to close the gap with Georgia is to land elite talent. Scheme helps, but ultimately, the teams with the best talent are the teams competing for championships.
And to land elite talent, you need elite recruiters. If Georgia hires Raymond, it will make the Bulldogs even tougher to beat on the recruiting trail.
Tennessee needs to be on the phone yesterday trying to convince Raymond to come to Knoxville.
Obviously, if Raymond prefers Georgia, then there's not much the Vols can do. But they at least have to try to hire him. I know Heupel values continuity, and that's certainly important, but without elite recruits, that continuity doesn't provide much value.
If Tennessee is going to play "elite defense" like Heupel suggested earlier this season, they need to hire some big-time assistants. Raymond, who has a long track record of success, is everything the Vols could want in a cornerbacks coach. Not trying to hire him would be a massive miss by Heupel.
