It appears that Kentucky Wildcats offensive coordinator Liam Coen is about to become the latest college football coach to bolt for the NFL.
The move isn't official yet, but multiple reports have indicated that Coen is leaving Lexington to become the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' new offensive coordinator.
This will be the second time in two years that Coen has left Kentucky for the NFL. Coen stepped down as the Wildcats' offensive coordinator in early 2022 to take over as the Los Angeles Rams' offensive coordinator. He returned to Kentucky after the 2022 season.
When Coen returned to Kentucky ahead of the 2023 season, Wildcats fans were understandably concerned that he might leave again at some point for the NFL.
Coen, however, assured fans that he was ready to "plant some roots" and that he wasn't "in a rush to go anywhere".
A year after making those comments, Coen is rushing out of Lexington, uprooting his recently planted roots in the process.
I don't blame Coen for leaving for the NFL. This new world of NIL and the transfer portal makes college jobs less desirable than ever. But you're only as good as your word. And it's going to be hard for Coen to build any trust in the football world after the way he totally gaslit Kentucky fans.
