The Tennessee Vols will kick off the 2025 college football season on Saturday in Atlanta against the Syracuse Orange.

Tennessee is looking to return to the College Football Playoff after losing in the first round to the Ohio State Buckeyes last winter.

The Vols will feature a new starting quarterback in UCLA transfer Joey Aguilar, four new starting offensive linemen, and a young wide receiver room that’s overflowing with potential.

Syracuse is also going with a new starting quarterback this season. Notre Dame transfer Steve Angeli won the starting job during fall camp. He’ll lead an offense that’s looking to replace a significant amount of production from last season.

On Wednesday, CBS Sports dropped their score predictions for the matchup between Tennessee and Syracuse.

CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer has Tennessee winning 34-24, though he noted that he has “questions” about the Vols’ offense.

“I also have real questions about Tennessee’s offense after losing Dylan Sampson, Nico Iamaleava and almost every key pass catcher on the roster,” wrote Hummer. “The Orange are also a little better in the trenches than people realize. The Vols win, but it’s a four-quarter game.”

CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford, meanwhile, has Tennessee winning 34-16.

“It’s going to take several weeks to see if Josh Heupel gets the last laugh with his offseason decision to let (Nico) Iamaleava walk in favor of Joey Aguilar at quarterback,” wrote Crawford. “Fresh off a playoff trip last fall, Tennessee may not reach the field in 2025 but should get to bowl eligibility with ease given some of the talent returning in other spots.”

Tennessee and Syracuse are set to kick off at 12:00 PM ET on Saturday.
