The Tennessee Vols lost a defensive transfer target to another SEC program on Wednesday.

North Carolina Tar Heels transfer linebacker Khmori House visited Tennessee this week, but he committed to the Arkansas Razorbacks on Wednesday afternoon.

House, who started his career at Washington, was recruited in high school by current Vols linebackers coach William Inge.

Tennessee is in need of a linebacker after losing Arion Carter to the NFL.

The Vols could be trying to land Penn State transfer linebacker Amare Campbell

While House was clearly a player the Vols were interested in, Penn State transfer linebacker Amare Campbell would likely be a much better fit.

Campbell, who is expected to visit Tennessee at some point this week, played under new Vols defensive coordinator Jim Knowles at Penn State in 2025.

The Virginia native started his career at North Carolina after signing with the Tar Heels as a three-star recruit during the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Campbell transferred to Penn State last May.

After Campbell’s first practice at Penn State last summer, he was named by Knowles as the “defender of the day.”

“What I saw from Amare was the ability to play in space, and then also inside the box,” said Knowles of Campbell last summer. “So I thought he had a really nice combination of the athletic skills necessary to operate in the open field, but when it came to being tough inside, those are the linebackers that are hard to find. Can they be in space? And then can they defend the straight-ahead run? I saw that on film.”

After Campbell’s first couple of practices at Penn State, Knowles described the former three-star recruit as a “natural linebacker.”

“In two days, I see a lot of natural linebacker skills,” said Knowles. “You don’t see that as much in this day and age of college football because a lot of linebackers are converted from other positions…There’s a skill to playing linebacker that a lot of it is innate and instinctual…a lot of it’s through natural instinct — through things that you can’t teach.”

Whether it’s Campbell or someone else, the Vols definitely need to find a transfer linebacker with some experience.
