The Tennessee Vols have fallen behind in the battle for a key 2024 in-state recruit.

And the kicker is that the recruit is actually currently committed to Tennessee.

The caveat, however, is that he's committed to the Vols for baseball. And that commitment doesn't seem like it means much right now.

2024 four-star wide receiver Amari Jefferson is an impressive dual sport athlete who is currently committed to Tennessee for baseball.

That commitment happened before Jeffeson's football recruitment picked up. For whatever reason Jefferson has never officially decommitted from UT for baseball, but he doesn't recognize that commitment as binding, either.

Josh Heupel and his staff would love to land Jefferson for football, but it sounds like the Volunteers have faded a bit in the battle for the talented four-star athlete.

Jefferson told On3 this month that Alabama and Georgia are "neck and neck" at the top of his recruitment with Tennessee holding steady in third.

“I wouldn’t say I have a leader. I think Alabama and Georgia are kind of neck and neck as far as my recruitment. Tennessee is a little bit under that,” said Jefferson recently.

Jefferson, 6-foot-1/195 lbs from Chattanooga, TN, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 23 athlete in the nation and the No. 6 player in the state of Tennessee.

The Vols certainly don't want to lose one of the top recruits in the state of Tennessee to Alabama or Georgia. UT is set to host Jefferson on an official visit in June so that will be their next big chance to make a move in the battle for the coveted 2024 recruit.

Tennessee has built a lot of momentum on the recruiting trail over the last year. Missing on Jefferson, though, would certainly halt some of that momentum. This is a player the Vols definitely need to land.
