Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel went viral this week thanks to a not-so-flattering photo.

Heupel visited Baylor School in Chattanooga on Friday while on the recruiting trail.

Erik Kimrey, a former South Carolina quarterback who is currently the head football coach at Baylor School, tweeted a photo of himself with Heupel.

The tweet quickly went viral due to Heupel’s slightly disheveled look.

Baylor School is an important recruiting hot spot for the Volunteers.

Tennessee signed five-star offensive tackle Gabriel Osenda and three-star cornerback Jamyan Theodore out of Baylor School during the 2026 recruiting cycle.

Additionally, the Vols’ top 2027 recruiting target, five-star running back David Gabriel Georges, attends Baylor School.

Oh, and Baylor School is also the home of 2030 quarterback Marshall Manning, the son of Vols legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame member Peyton Manning.

Josh Heupel deserves some grace for his look in the viral photo at Baylor School

This won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s spent more than 30 seconds on the internet, but the comments about Heupel’s appearance in the viral photo were not kind.

And that’s unfortunate — largely because I think Heupel deserves a little grace. The last two months have been absolutely insane for Tennessee football. From the Legend Bey signing day drama to hiring a new defensive coordinator and strength coach, to navigating the transfer portal (specifically the Sam Leavitt pursuit), it’s been a whirlwind for Heupel and his coaching staff (and those are just the highlights).

So I think we can forgive the guy for not being freshly shaven while out on the road recruiting. Between signing day, new hires, and the portal, Heupel’s had a lot bigger things on his plate over the past eight weeks.
