Tennessee Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt has been around a lot of great, competitive players during his college football career.
Pruitt has coached on national championship winning staffs at Alabama and Florida State. He was also on Georgia's staff under Mark Richt. Pruitt knows what kind of competitive spirit it takes to be successful in the SEC.
So when Pruitt says that former Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings is the most competitive player he's ever coached, it's saying a lot.
"I think his competitive spirit is probably in my 22 years of coaching, he might be No. 1 on the list when it comes to that. I mean, he’s up there at the very top", said Pruitt in an interview with The Athletic this week.
It would be hard to argue against Pruitt's statement. If you've watched Jennings play, you know he never takes a snap off. He never gives less than 100 percent.
That type of competitiveness is why Jennings was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
"He was one of our most favorite guys to watch. He’s a bulldog", said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan in the same interview with The Athletic.
"I feel like he could probably play linebacker if he wants. He’s willing to fight everybody out there."
While Vol fans are undoubtedly sad to see Jennings leave Knoxville, where he became a legend thanks to his hard-playing style and his hail mary reception to beat Georgia in 2016, the rest of the SEC is more than happy to see him in the NFL.
"The people in our league, which I think is the best league in the country, I can guarantee you they’re glad to see Jauan Jennings not at Tennessee", said Pruitt.
There are a lot of SEC defensive backs breathing a sigh of relief that they don't have to attempt to tackle Jennings this fall.
