Earlier this month, On3's Chad Simmons described the Tennessee Vols as the team to beat for 2024 five-star defensive lineman Williams Nwaneri.
Nwaneri, 6-foot-5/250 lbs from Lees Summitt, MO, is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 1 defensive lineman in the nation and the No. 4 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class.
The talented defensive lineman is expected to announce his commitment later this fall.
The Oklahoma Sooners have been viewed as the Vols' top competition for Nwaneri, but it appears there's a new contender in the mix.
Nwaneri took a visit to Texas A&M this week that reportedly went well for the Aggies. In fact, Nwaneri told 247Sports that Texas A&M is "most definitely a contender".
If Tennessee is going to win the SEC and/or a national championship, they'll need a dominant defensive line. That means they can't take any positives away from being a legitimate finalist for a five-star defensive lineman like Nwaneri. It's time for the Vols to close the deal with elite defenders.
There's still a long way to go until Nwaneri commits — he likely won't commit until after his official visit to Oregon on September 23 — so Tennessee has plenty of time to continue making a strong impression on the talented defensive lineman.
Unfortunately for the Vols, it looks like they'll have to fend off an additional program with the Aggies now in the mix.
