The Tennessee Vols would love to get a commitment from 2021 four-star defensive back Isaiah Johnson, but they're going to have to make up some ground in the coming months.
Johnson, 6-foot-2/180 lbs from Bluefield, WV, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 1 player in the state of West Virginia and the No. 5 cornerback in the nation. He's also rated as the No. 61 overall 2021 recruit in the nation.
Rivals recruiting analyst Adam Friedman recently "ranked the contenders" for Johnson and he has the Vols as the fourth most likely team to land the talented defensive back, behind Georgia, Oklahoma and LSU. Friedman noted that Tennessee was previously near the top of Johnson's list, but fell behind a bit lately. Friedman added, however, that Johnson has a solid relationship with the Vols' coaching staff.
Johnson is the type of player that would thrive in Tennessee's defensive scheme. He's exactly what Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt looks for in a defensive back — tall, lengthy and fast.
247Sports national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn describes Johnson as a player with "superb body control with plus athleticism". Dohn also noted that Johnson "can impact a high-level program immediately".
If the Vols can get Johnson back on campus after the recruiting shutdown is lifted (after May 31, unless it's extended), then Tennessee could quickly jump back to the top of the list. Johnson would have the opportunity to play early at UT, which could make the Volunteers a very enticing option for the talented defensive back.
