The Tennessee Vols are reportedly one of the top schools for an elite 2027 5-star recruit
The Tennessee Vols are focusing on the 2027 recruiting cycle now that the 2026 early signing period is over.
The Tennessee Vols are reportedly one of the top schools for an elite 2027 EDGE.
2027 five-star EDGE Anthony Sweeney told On3 this week that Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Alabama are the three programs standing out the most in his recruitment.
It’s Alabama and Tennessee, however, that are currently Sweeney’s top two schools.
“Alabama and Tennessee are really up there for me right now,” said Sweeney to On3. “I still have a lot of visits to take, but those two stand out.”
Sweeney, 6-foot-4/230 pounds from Olney, MD, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 3 EDGE in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Maryland. He’s also rated as the No. 18 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class.
Tennessee is expected to receive an official visit from Anthony Sweeney
Sweeney took an unofficial visit to Tennessee for the Vols’ loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in November. The five-star recruit told 247Sports earlier this month that he plans to take official visits to the schools that he took unofficial visits to this past season.
“All the schools I visited during this past season, they are definitely going to get set up for an OV,” said Sweeney to 247Sports
Sweeney also told 247Sports that Vols outside linebackers coach LeVorn Harbin (AKA Coach Chop) is one of the coaches he talks to the most.
For now, it’s unclear if Harbin will be back on Tennessee’s staff in 2026 under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.
It’s worth noting, though, that Sweeney has already spoke with Knowles.
“I love the guys down there. Coach Chop and Coach Heupel are great,” said Sweeney to On3. “The new defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles, seems really genuine, too.”
