USC Trojans quarterback JT Daniels entered the transfer portal on Thursday and the Tennessee Vols are reportedly a team to watch for the former five-star recruit.

On Thursday evening, I wrote that I would be surprised to see Daniels end up in Knoxville, thanks to the Vols' already crowded quarterback room.

But unexpected things tend to happen in college football (I would've never thought a year ago that Cade Mays would transfer from Georgia to Tennessee), so it's always best to be prepared for various scenarios.

It's certainly possible that Daniels could end up at Tennessee, even if it's somewhat unlikely. UT head coach Jeremy Pruitt understands the importance of having a great quarterback. The more quality quarterbacks you have, the more likely you are to land a great one.

However, there's a reason Daniels is considering transferring from USC. He wants to start.

And maybe he would start at Tennessee. But then UT has several other quarterbacks on the roster who could make the same decision as Daniels.

Specifically, there's true freshman Harrison Bailey, who is expected to be the savior of Tennessee football.

If Daniels, who has three years of eligibility remaining, ends up in Tennessee in 2020, there's a really, really good chance he'd beat out Bailey and incumbent starting quarterback Jarrett Guarantano for the starting job (assuming Daniels is healthy).

Would Bailey transfer after the 2020 season in that scenario?

Maybe not. Bailey seems to be all-in at Tennessee. Maybe he sticks around and wins the job in 2021. Or maybe he gets frustrated and leaves. No one really knows for sure how it would all play out for Bailey, Daniels and Tennessee.

But there's definitely some risk involved with pursuing Daniels. I'm not opposed to adding talented players to the roster, but Pruitt has to consider the players already on the roster and how they'd be affected by such moves.

Of course, it's possible that Daniels sticks around at USC. Or maybe he's more interested in heading elsewhere, like LSU or Ole Miss.

Either way, I think Tennessee needs to be careful with how they proceed. If Pruitt and his staff decide to strongly pursue Daniels, they need to communicate with Bailey the "why" and make sure there are no misinterpreted signals being sent.
