The Tennessee Vols could use a talent infusion at tight end with McCallan Castles and Jacob Warren both being redshirt seniors. On Monday, Josh Heupel took a big step towards adding a significant name to the tight end room.
TE Justin Joly, who entered the transfer portal last week from UConn, put up a post on Twitter/X on Monday morning confirming he has received a scholarship offer from Tennessee.
Heupel and Tennessee TE coach Alec Abeln got a good look at Joly back on November 4 when the Vols and Huskies faced off in Neyland Stadium. Despite the Vols winning 59-3, Joly had a solid game against Tennessee's defense, catching 8 passes for 89 yards. For the season, Joly had 56 catches for 578 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Tennessee has had some pretty good players at tight end the last couple of years. Princeton Fant just got his first call up for the Dallas Cowboys last week. Castles has had some moments this year in the passing game. However, so far, no tight end has eclipsed 270 receiving yards in a season under Heupel. Joly could give Tennessee an element of athleticism and playmaking ability in the passing game that they haven't had in Heupel's three years in Knoxville.
There's little doubt that Tennessee isn't the only offer from a major program that Joly will receive while he's mulling his options in the portal. However, it's the first one that he's announced on Twitter/X so far, so his UT scholarship offer appears to be one of the earliest he's received, if not the first.
If the Vols are the early bird in this race, Joly could be quite the worm for Heupel.
UPDATE: Per 247 Sports, Joly will be in Knoxville this weekend to visit the Vols. Heupel will get the first crack at landing the talented tight end.
