The Tennessee Vols got hit with a stray during the opening round of the College Football Playoff thanks to old friend adversary Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated.

There was a significant amount of complaining this weekend after blowout wins in the first round of the playoff by Ole Miss and Oregon over Tulane and James Madison, respectively.

Plenty of college football fans took to social media to voice their displeasure over Group of Five teams (Tulane and James Madison this season) being included in the playoff, which resulted in some non-competitive games.

Pat Forde reminds everyone that Tennessee was blown out by Ohio State in the playoff last season

In response to the complaints, Forde was quick to remind fans of the Vols’ 42-17 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the opening round of last season’s College Football Playoff.

Tennessee fans may not love being reminded of the Vols’ futile effort against the Buckeyes last season, but Forde makes a good point.

There are always going to be non-competitive games in sports — even in a playoff scenario. Sometimes, that’s just how games play out. It doesn’t mean a team wasn’t deserving, or that another team would’ve fared better — it’s just the identity of that particular game.
