One of the biggest developments of the offseason for the Tennessee Vols football program was the news that defensive back Boo Carter will see time on offense in 2025.

Carter was a key player for the Vols as a true freshman in 2024. The dynamic defensive back's elite competitiveness combined with his physical skills helped the Chattanooga-area native become an instant contributor in Tennessee's defense last season.

The former four-star recruit flirted with the idea of entering the NCAA transfer portal after the 2024 season. But he decided to stick around at Tennessee after receiving assurances that he'll have an offensive role in 2025.

Carter's role on offense is a big X-factor for the Vols next season. It's no secret that Tennessee needs more production from their wide receivers than what they've received the last two seasons. And Carter could help provide that production if he lives up to the hype.

Of course, we won't know exactly what Tennessee will get from Carter on offense until we see him in action.

VolQuest's Austin Price, however, is feeling optimistic about what Carter has to offer.

The longtime Vols insider said during an appearance on 104.5 The Zone's Ramon, Kayla, and Will on Tuesday that he'll be "shocked" if the early returns on Carter aren't positive this spring.

"Tennessee obviously needs him in the defensive secondary, and so that part will remain very, very important," said Price. "But you know, Boo is going to get a shot — especially starting this spring, to prove he can be an asset on offense. And if you know anything about Boo Carter, you know that when he sets his mind to something, there's a pretty good chance he's going to accomplish it. So he's locked in on that offensive part the spring. And I'll be shocked if we're not hearing really good returns as we exit spring."

Chris Brazzell is the Vols' only returning starting wide receiver in 2025.

As a result, Carter will join Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley, along with Alabama transfer Amari Jefferson and true freshman Travis Smith, as young players looking to make an impact at wide receiver for Tennessee in 2025.

The Vols' success in 2025 largely hinges on that group of young players rising to the occasion. If Carter can prove to be a dependable playmaker on the offensive side of the ball, it could help give Tennessee's offense an explosive element in the passing game that the program has been missing the last two seasons.
