Tennessee Vols legend Jason Witten is returning to the SEC.

But not in a way that will make Vols fans smile.

According to multiple reports, the Oklahoma Sooners are hiring Witten to serve as the program’s new tight ends coach.

Witten was previously the head coach at Liberty Christian High School in Texas.

Jason Witten’s son is a five-star recruit

Witten’s son, Cooper, is a 2027 five-star linebacker from Texas who’s being recruited by the Vols.

Oklahoma, however, is one of Tennessee’s top competitors for the Vol legacy.

“Where does Tennessee stand? I think Tennessee is obviously right there at or near the top,” said VolQuest’s Austin Price last summer of Cooper’s recruitment. “I think he’s very conscious to really push the ‘Don’t just assume I’m going to Tennessee because my dad went there’. Now, I hear that a lot from legacy kids, and rightfully so. They’re their own person. They have to be treated as such. Just because dad went there doesn’t mean they’re automatically going to go there.

“But Tennessee is not recruiting him like that. Tennessee’s recruiting him as if his name is Cooper Smith or Cooper Johnson — just a very generic name, not Witten.”

Texas A&M and Texas, among others, are also in the mix.

Tennessee’s done everything right so far when it comes to recruiting Cooper. The Vols, however, may not be able to compete with Oklahoma after it hired Cooper’s dad as an assistant coach.

Cooper Witten is expected to announce his commitment in July.
