Former Tennessee Vols baseball outfielder Drew Gilbert is off to a scorching hot start in the Houston Astros' farm system.

Gilbert, the No. 28 overall selection in the 2022 MLB Draft, was recently promoted to Double-A Corpus Christi after dominating in Single-A with the Asheville Tourists.

The former Vol is hitting .333 with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 31 games this season (10 games at Double-A and 21 games at Single-A).

Gilbert had a famous teammate this past week in Corpus Christi. Former AL MVP Jose Altuve, a second baseman for the Astros, was in town briefly on a rehab stint before he rejoins Houston on Friday night (Altuve suffered a broken hand earlier this spring in the World Baseball Classic).

On Friday, ahead of the Astros' game against the Oakland Athletics, Altuve was asked about Gilbert.

The two-time World Series champion made it clear that he thinks Gilbert is ready for the big leagues.

"He’s ready, man," said Altuve. "Beautiful swing, made some good plays…I really love the way [that] him and a few more guys on that team are ready to play in the big leagues. You want to see the future of the Astros, go there."

The Astros aren't going to rush Gilbert — he has superstar potential. But it wouldn't be a surprise if he's called up to the big leagues before the end of the season.

In fact, I'd be willing to bet that Gilbert is called up before the sun sets on the 2023 season.
