Tennessee Vols quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator Joey Halzle met with reporters on Wednesday and he explained how he learned about his recent promotion.
Halzle was promoted to offensive coordinator in December after Alex Golesh left to become the new head coach at USF.
According to Halzle, the job offer from Josh Heupel was about as casual as it gets.
"Well, Heup called me, he said 'are you ready?', I said 'yes sir', he said 'ok' and that was kind of the end of that one," said Halzle when asked how he learned that he was Tennessee's new offensive coordinator.
That story shouldn't be a big surprise for Tennessee fans. Halzle has been with Heupel since his playing days at Oklahoma in the mid-2000s. He even followed Heupel to Utah State in 2015 when Bob Stoops fired Heupel as the Sooners' offensive coordinator.
Promoting Halzle was a no-brainer. Continuity is extremely important to Heupel and Halzle was obviously ready to take the reigns. Heupel's subtle job offer was just an extension of the trust that's been built between the two long-time collaborators.
