Duane Brown has not looked good in the first two games for the Jets and now he won’t be on the field at all for at least the next four weeks.
The Jets placed the 38-year-old Brown on IR prior to the game versus the New England Patriots with a lingering hip injury. Brown going on IR means he won’t be available for at least the next four weeks.
Brown did not practice all week, but that wasn’t a surprise considering his age and that he was still working himself back into football shape. On Friday, coach Robert Saleh said he was "very confident" that Brown, despite not practicing all week, would play. He was listed as questionable.
Brown was coming off one of the worst performances of his career against Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys. Brown was the NFL's lowest-ranked tackle in pass-block win rate through two games this season.
The Jets offensive line as a whole has been abysmal through two games this year. The offensive line has allowed a league-high pressure percentage at a staggering 57.6%.
You never want to see a player of Brown’s caliber go out, but this might be a blessing in disguise. Brown was clearly not healthy or in football shape in the first two weeks of the season and this gives him a chance to get healthy while getting a fresh body in on the offensive line.
Where that fresh body will line up on the offensive line remains a question. As of Saturday evening, the Jets have not announced who will replace Brown in the starting lineup, which might be so they don’t tip their hand to Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.
My guess is that they will keep Mekhi Becton at right tackle for this game and put Billy Turner at the left tackle. If they do decide to move Becton to the left side, I could see them pushing Alijah Vera-Tucker to the right tackle spot and getting rookie Joe Tippmann in the game at right guard.
Guard Wes Schweitzer is dealing with a concussion and not likely to be available for Sunday. Max Mitchell is the other option at tackle.
The Jets are facing an uphill climb this season with the injury to starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers and a difficult schedule in a stacked conference. The Jets need to get the offensive line fixed if they can even begin to hope to get Zach Wilson comfortable enough to lead a talented team to some wins.
With Brown being out until at least week eight against the New York Giants, it is next man up time for the Jets.
