Pros of Omar Cooper Jr.
- Cooper’s route running is very patient. He doesn’t tip his routes at the stem, and presents a threat to go any direction. He also understands how to weave through zone coverage to prevent defenders from getting physical with him.
- Has position versatility. Cooper can play in the slot or on the outside, and has the release package to succeed at either spot.
- He showcases power in multiple ways. Cooper is difficult to take down in the open field, showing the ability to break arm tackles in open space. He is an impactful blocker with the attitude you want to see, as he loves to finish defenders.
- Has a varied release package from the inside and outside positions. Gets off press coverage and stacks receivers.
- Thrives in yards after catch situations, where he can catch the ball in stride and take it upfield.
Cons of Omar Cooper Jr.
- While he is patient in his route running, Cooper can use for work refining it, especially when it comes to snapping off routes and gaining separation with technique.
- Size is a concern for Cooper, especially at the catch point. Doesn’t have the biggest catch radius, which will be impactful in contested catch situations.
- Top speed isn’t there for Cooper. He will struggleto stack cornerbacks going vertically down the field.
Background
Cooper was a three-star recruit out of Indianapolis who committed to Tom Allen and spent two years with him as the head coach. When Curt Cignetti came to Bloomington, Cooper chose to stay, and it benefited both him and the Hoosiers. He was a role player for the Hoosiers in 2024, catching just 28 passes, but doing so with a 21.2 yards per catch average. He took on a much bigger role in 2025, catching 69 passes for 937 yards and 13 touchdowns, becoming a huge target for Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza.
Player Evaluation
Cooper is a stocky receiver who will thrive best in the slot at the next level. He’s a sure-handed player who displays patient route running and is great after the catch, with over half of his yards in 2025 coming that way. Cooper is at his best when you get him the ball in stride, allowing him to gain a runway to take advantage of his YAC ability. He’s a very physical player, forcing a whopping 27 missed tackles in 2025. He is a solid wide receiver overall, but he has some areas of opportunity. There isn’t a developed route tree right now with Cooper, nor is there a top gear to stack cornerbacks down the field.
