The last time a team was able to go back-to-back and win two straight Super Bowls was the New England Patriots of 2003-04. The Kansas City Chiefs did it on Sunday, ending the nearly 20-year streak. They have also won their third Super Bowl title in five years.
Now, they have the opportunity to do something that has never been done, which would submit them as the greatest dynasty ever. They are already a dynasty, which is not easy to do. Their names already stand with the likes of the New England Patriots in the modern era, the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 70s, and even the Green Bay Packers of the 60s.
But they could really separate themselves if they win the Super Bowl next year and three-peat. It's never been done before because it is that hard. But Andy Reid isn't ruling it out.
"Yeah, that would be something," Reid said early Monday morning. "I just asked that to this guy [Patrick Mahomes] right here. I said, 'Has anybody won it three times?' He goes 'no.' I said, 'Alright.' We will see, you know. We have great competition in the AFC West. We just had some hirings, and these guys are good football coaches with good quarterbacks and are good teams.
"So, it's not just going to be easy. We will have an over on our team, which every team has, so you don't know. There is a whole lot of unexpected. You have to keep battling through it, have a good offseason, a good training camp, and then, that ball is shaped kind of funny, so it has to bounce for you in the right direction."
This year was by far the hardest route to the Super Bowl the Chiefs have ever had. During the regular season, they played one home game against the Miami Dolphins, the fastest and best offense in the league. They then beat the second and one seed on the road. Then, they beat the NFC One seed in the Super Bowl.
They did all of that by losing more games in the regular season than they ever had and also not having a reliable offense for most of the year while the defense dominated. It was much, much different than what the Chiefs are used to. They are now a dynasty, but to three-peat, they still have a lot they need to fix this offseason. That doesn't mean they can't do it because if anyone can, it's the Chiefs, who now have the seventh-most Super Bowls of all time.
