Georgia football lost prolific running backs coach Dell McGee to Georgia State's vacant head coach job last week but it didn't take Kirby Smart long to find his replacement.

According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Georgia is set to hire Georgia Tech wide receivers coach Josh Crawford as their new running backs coach.

Zenitz added to his report that the former Georgia high school coach was "in the mix for Georgia’s wide receiver coach job after impressing in the interview process."

One of the main concerns with the Bulldogs losing McGee was whether or not they could find someone that held the same in-state recruiting power as him, and they may have done that with Crawford due to his extensive Georgia high school coaching background.

Before jumping to the collegiate level, Crawford spent a decade coaching Georgia high school football at some of the top-ranked programs across the state, including Colquitt County, Valdosta, Lee County, Jefferson County and Greater Atlanta Christian.

When Crawford was first hired at Georgia Tech last year, he spoke on the relationships that he built during his high school coaching tenure and how valuable that will be at the college level.

"I spent 10 years in this state coaching high school football at some really, really good programs," Crawford said. "So that allowed me to establish some really good relationships with a lot of coaches in this state and also have an opportunity to coach a lot of good players. Coaching in the state helped me from a relationship standpoint. And then I was very fortunate to be in some of the top programs in the state and the southeast, which I felt prepared me from a coaching standpoint and from a work ethic standpoint to be able to translate at this level.

"…I am very grateful for my high school tenure."

After coaching at the high school level and before joining GA Tech, Crawford spent two years at Western Kentucky as the Hilltoppers outside receivers coach in 2021 and co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach in 2022.

While Crawford has a longer history coaching wide receivers, he played running back collegiately for three seasons at Morehouse College in Atlanta.

He earned his bachelor's degree at Moorehouse and a Master's degree at both UGA and Valdosta State.

Crawford will be tasked with amplifying a Georgia backfield that lost their two lead rushers to this year's NFL draft.
