It has been an up-and-down campaign for wide receiver Rashod Bateman in his third year with the Baltimore Ravens.
Bateman is still yet to tally at least 40 receiving yards in a game this year. He also sits at a mere one touchdown catch recorded on the season.
Bateman has also not emerged as a reliable target for Lamar Jackson. The sixth-year quarterback has posted a 68.3 passer rating when targeting Bateman this season.
Ravens wide receivers coach Greg Lewis has worked closely with Bateman since his first day in the organization. He was asked during a press conference on Tuesday why Bateman still has not orchestrated a breakout game this season, and he took some time to come to the defense of the third-year wideout.
"Because there's only one football," Lewis said. "There's only one football that goes around to everybody. We have an enormous amount of playmakers with ability on offense, and we try to get everybody involved. When your number is called, the expectation is for you to make those plays. When Bate's number has been called, he's made those plays as the case with everybody else.
"We talked about that from Day One. There's one football, and that's the way it goes."
In the big picture, Lewis is "looking forward" to continuing to work with Bateman.
"Bate has been awesome daily with just trying to continue to work his craft and get better each and every day," Lewis said. "It's showing up every week as you just noted. That's a positive for us as a team, because the more guys we have out there capable of making plays, the better for us scoring points on offense.
"So, it's been awesome to see him continue to grow into this offense and grow as a person. I'm looking forward to the future with him as well."
Bateman has recorded 236 receiving yards through 11 games played this year.
Ravens head into bye week as the clear favorite to win the AFC North
No surprise here.
