Bengals HC Zac Taylor makes hilarious joke that certain teams won't find funny at all
Certain NFL teams won’t be laughing with Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor
Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor made a hilarious comment at the NFL draft combine this week that specific teams probably won't find very funny.
Taylor is one of the few NFL coaches who doesn't have to worry about the quarterback position.
The Bengals are in good shape at quarterback thanks to Joe Burrow.
Only a few teams (the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, etc) truly feel like they have the quarterback position wrapped up for the next 10 years. And the Bengals are among those teams.
On Tuesday, Taylor was asked by a reporter what kind of advice he'd give a team looking for a quarterback.
Taylor's funny response likely won't draw many laughs from teams that don't have a franchise quarterback (which is most of the league).
"You gotta find Joe Burrow and then draft him," said Taylor. "I'll let these other teams sort that out that are in that position now. We did it (drafted Burrow) and it worked for us."
It's that simple — just find Burrow and draft him and then go to the Super Bowl two years later.
If only it were actually that easy.
Cincinnati was incredibly fortunate to have the No. 1 pick in 2020. Most drafts don't have a transcendent quarterback available.
If the Bengals have the No. 1 pick in 2019 or 2021, they're rolling with Kyler Murray or Trevor Lawrence. And as talented as those quarterbacks are, they aren't Burrow. And neither of them would've led the Bengals to the Super Bowl in 2021/22.
Or if the Bengals end up with the No. 2 pick in 2020 and they take Tua Tagovailoa, it might be the Dolphins who land Burrow and emerge as a Super Bowl contender in the AFC.
Essentially, there's a lot of luck that goes into landing a quarterback like Joe Burrow. There is no real strategy other than hoping that a college quarterback bursts onto the scene and becomes a can't-miss prospect.
Unfortunately for the teams in the NFL without a franchise quarterback, those types of guys don't come along very often.
