The Detroit Lions defensive coordinator search is on and while it may seem simple that the Lions would just go with someone currently on the staff like Kelvin Sheppard, the team is opting to be thorough in their search and interview outside candidates.

There are some natural concerns when you bring in a candidate from the outside because that candidate more often than not wants to come in and change the way things align with that defense. Maybe they want to go 4-3 instead of 3-4 for example. Maybe they want to change how the linebackers work or anything else you could think of.

That's not going to be the case in Detroit. Lions GM Brad Holmes' comments on Thursday point to the idea that whoever gets that DC job, They'll be aligning to the Lions instead of the Lions aligning to him.

"I think that's a great thing about me and Dan, and that's just the foundation, that's the standard we play a certain way. And I think that's been a vivid display for the past few years about what type of player we want.

I get it, man. New coordinator comes in, it's like, 'Well, I gotta have this kind of guy, and have this kind of guy,' you know, and look, we scout everybody, we look at everybody, but there are certain core intangibles that, I don't care what the arm length is of a specific player, if he doesn't play like how we need him to play, then it doesn't fit."

That's going to be a big deal there. The Lions are going to stick to their core principles and while they may make small changes schematically, they don't plan to overhaul their defense and completely change the way it operates and they don't plan to change the way they scout and add players to that defense.

If anything, this points more and more in the direction of the Lions just hiring an inside candidate to be their defensive coordinator. That guy already knows the score around here.
