Big Baller Beane just keeps on rolling, this time getting a new contract done with superstar quarterback Josh Allen, despite Allen having four years left on his old contract.
Not only that, but it's not an extension — it's a contract reset for six years, $330 million, with $250 million of it guaranteed. It's a lot of money, but it might actually help the team financially this season.
Basically everything is coming up Allen's way, aside from getting a Super Bowl. This year, he got engaged to actress Hailee Steinfeld, won his first NFL MVP, and now cashes in on a massive payday.
The deal is incredibly team-friendly. At $55 million average annual value, Allen is taking the same average as Trevor Lawrence against a much higher cap than when Lawrence signed his contract. Details of the structure in terms of what exactly this does for the team's cap space this year haven't been reported yet, but it's fair to assume that the contract will be back-loaded, like his last one was.
Making a move like this with Allen is only necessary if Beane has intentions to make a big move. Clearing up plenty of cap space gives Beane the flexibility to trade for an expensive star, something that Bills Mafia has been looking for Beane to do this offseason to add a difference maker to the defensive line.
Myles Garrett and Maxx Crosby are already off the board, with both superstar pass rushers signing new massive contracts to stay with their current teams. The biggest name known to be available is Trey Hendrickson from Cincinnati, who has been one of the best sack artists in the league in recent years. Could this be the move to free up money to get him? Beane clearly isn't done.
Greg Rousseau actually shot himself in the foot by taking his new deal with the Bills when he did
That worked out pretty well for Buffalo.
